On how Jason Schwartzman got the role as Max Fischer

Wes Anderson: Jason Schwartzman we found after a long, long search. We spent over a year trying to cast this part. We looked into all these different schools, and we looked in England and Canada..and he actually lived in Los Angeles. He’s from a movie family, his mother is Talia Shire, his uncle is Francis Copolla and he has the exact opposite background from what I was expecting and he’s physically completely different from what I imagined. But the second that I met him I thought that he’s something completely different from any other people that I’ve met and he’s the best that we’ve seen. Owen Wilson: When Wes and I was writing the movie, I think the kid that we had in mind was this kid from Flirting, he was also in Shine..I imagined a kid like Wes, kind of a very thin, pale kid who look a bit like a young Mick Jagger, slightly kind of uncooked look, and Jason obviously doesn’t look like that but when he came in and did a reading it was funny because it was so different from the way Wes and I imagined the role physically, but he could say the line so well and he was really smart, getting all the jokes and stuffs.Jason Schwartzman: [Wes] said when I walked into the room he instantly re-thought the look of the entire character, he thought it could be more Dustin Hoffman, which just means shorter.

"Wes thought it would be a good idea if I WAX MY CHEST! and I waxed it..for two hours. it was the most painful thing I’ve ever done. And you never see my chest in the movie except for this [wrestling] scene, sort of. And I’m not a yeti by any means, I’m not sasquatch. But he wanted me to be sort of hairless so I waxed it and this is the only time you see it in the movie. But in the whole movie my chest is waxed but I’m the only one who really knows it’s waxed so it’s sort of method waxing or something."

Jason Schwartzman in the Rushmore - Criterion Collection commentary

it’s really funny how he actually kind of yelled I WAX MY CHEST in the commentary.

is the rooney front man the next robert palmer? (nylon interview, december 2009)

Like Clark Kent (or Hannah Montana, for that matter), the musician Robert Schwartzman leads a bit of a double life.

For some, the California native is a singer and composer for Rooney, an indie rock band that surfs between the Beach Boys’ lithium chords and the Strokes’ fuck-it-all lyrics.  For others, he’s a teen heartthrob who kissed Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries, to the jealous groans of a million tenth grade girls.

"I believe in not over thinking things too much. When the right thing comes along, you really don’t have a choice."

"Jason is a bit of an outsider. There is this quality of an old soul to him. As much of a charmed life as he’s had,” Ames says, referring to Schwartzman’s family connections - he is the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola and his cousins include Nicholas Cage and Roman and Sofia Coppola - “he’s also had some major blows - he lost his dad to cancer [in 1994]. He’s tried to deal with those things in the best way possible, and I think that gives him a certain depth. It might seem like he’s this cool guy, and all of that, but inside he’s an outsider. He probably doesn’t feel like he quite fits in anywhere."

"I never really considered myself an actor because I never pursued it. Really, it was all about my band even before I got the part in the movie. I’ve always been real close to film world. I love film, and I will do things in film, but music is more satisfying. It feels more like me."
